"today" with lester holt and jenna wolfe live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a sunday. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolfe and joining us for the first time this season a special guest known simply as winter, even though it's fall. it is cold out there. >> and to reach and find the proper jacket today. hopefully i got the right one. it's cold outside across much of the country, as much as 25 degrees below normal for this time of year. some places will be in the teens today, and this cold front is moving east bringing chilly canadian air with it. we'll tell you how bad it will get and how long it will last in a moment. we'll get into presidential politics. both candidates riding a new wave of momentum. president obama hailing friday's unemployment numbers. governor romney on a roll after wednesday's debate. and with just 30 days until election day some polls show the race tightening. coming up, we'll break it all down for you. a new trend in an increasing

lines they didn't think would become quotable but have. we begin this morning with a cold snap grippinge. a cold snap gripping most of the country. the weather channel's stephanie abrams is upstairs tracking it for us. >> good morning to you at home. lester mentioned those record lows. we're seeing them into iowa. but that's not the only place where we are filling the chill. look at this frost and freeze advisory extending from the four corners to the south all the way into the northeast. so just how cold is it this morning as you're about to head out the door? there you go. the 20s and the 30s, the 40s as we look down towards jonesboro, arkansas, and, again, we're even seeing some of those teens right into the center of the country. i'm going to have more on the temperature story coming up later. first back to jenna and lester. >> already, stephanie. we'll get the rest of the nation's forecast from you in just a few minutes. time for the rest of the top stories. let's go to chris jansing at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning. good morning, everyone. an alleged plot to firebomb churches across the country has been stopped by police in

oklahoma. they've arrested 23-year-old gregory wyler ii who has ties to the chicago area. officers say they found 52 home baked bottle grenades in his hotel room along with plans to plant bombs in 48 area churches. meantime, hundreds of people are looking for a colorado girl who disappeared two days ago. here's more on the search for jessica. >> anything you think is significant. >> reporter: it's been two days since 10-year-old jessica ridgway kissed her mother good-bye and began her walk to school. she never made it. >> got to get her back to her parents. we would appreciate it. she's a beautiful, wonderful little girl. and we want her back. >> you don't know what to do, you know? it's really hard to, you know, think what could go on. she's over our house all the time. really miss her. >> reporter: jessica usually walks to a nearby park.

that's where she meets up with friends to walk the last mile to school. her mother was the last to see her. she just finished her overnight shift at work and woke to discover her daughter had disappeared. >> there's a big delay between when she was last seen and when we were notified and started about vating a lot of personnel to start searching for her. if it was my child, i would want someone out looking for my child. >> reporter: hundreds of people from jessica's colorado community have joined the search. >> you have a community out here that's pulling together to find every piece of evidence they can to get this girl back to her mom. >> reporter: jessica's father lives in missouri. her parents have been in court recently regarding her custody. however, police say at this point there is no person of interest in her tis disappearance. now to venezuela where voters are choosing their next president. the current leader, hugo chavez, is is hoping for an unprecedented third term. but polls indicate he may be

facing his stiffest challenge to date. kerry sanders is is in the capital, caracas weather more. good morning, kerry. >> reporter: good morning, chris. as we see our gas prices in the united states rising, the election here in oil-rich venezuela takes on importance. at 6:00 a.m. the polls opened here and in this country, which is about twice the size of california, it's expected there will be a 90% voter turnout today. venezuela is the fourth largest supplier of oil to the united states. and this country has the largest oil reserves in the world. how different are things here because of that? pull into a gas station in venezuela and it takes less than $3 to fill up an empty suv. but oil production in venezuela has dropped 30% in the last decade, which is one reason for hour higher gas prices. oil industry experts in the united states say president hugo chavez, who's been no friend of the united states, has failed to invest in the oil industry that

he nationalized in the early 2000s. challenging chavez is 40-year-old enrique. he's thin, energetic and some say the sexy candidate. a sign that folks here feel the vote could be close and perhaps contested. grocery stores have been mobbed as if residents are preparing for a hurricane. families are stocking up, fearful that over the election results there could be some sort of violence. in a last-minute statement from chavez, sort of surprising since he's made the united states his archenemy, he said, commenting on the u.s. election, he hopes obama gets re-elected. chris? >> kerry sanders in caracas, thank you. american airlines now says all 48 of its 757 boeings are back in service. they say they've fixed the problem with the pin that had caused entire rows of seats to come loose in flight. price of gasoline, it's risen to another all-time high in california today. it's now $4.66 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

it was $4.16 a week ago, $3.80 a year ago. californians are paying the highest gas prices in the nation. aaa says the national average is $3.81. finally, a surveillance camera caught the images of an out-of-control pickup truck crashing into a liquor store in california. the truck smashed through one of the walls narrowly missing the clerk and a customer. surprisingly no one was seriously hurt. using surveillance video police were able to track down the driver who fled the scene and he is charged with drunken driving. that's the news. now back to lester, jenna, and stephanie. >> chris jansing, thank you very much. stephanie abrams is back with a check of the weather. before we get to the forecast i want to congratulate dylan dreyer, she and her husband brian shared this photo from their wedding on saturday. >> how beautiful. >> we hope she is sleeping in and enjoying the honeymoon. once she gets back she will never sleep again -- no, considerably less. >> congrats. very nice.

both president obama and governor romney are trying to make their case to the nation as they hit their final stretch and they're not the only ones squaring off these days. john stewart and bill o'reilly are doing it as well. mike viqueira has more now from the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jenna. both candidates are pouring it on now, raising big piles of campaign cash and playing to ever bigger crowds. this with 30 days to go to the finish line. momentum off his debate's success, mitt romney kept the heat on the president last night in florida. >> he said, you know, you can't fix washington from the inside. you can only fix it from the outside. we'll give him that chance on november. >> reporter: the romney campaign says it's taken in $12 million in campaign cash. while the obama campaign reported a record monthly haul, $181 million in september, tops for either campaign this year. in his weekly address the president touted another september number, the unexpected drop in the jobless rate.

>> friday we learned the unemployment rate is at its lowest level since i took office. more americans are entering the workforce. more americans are getting jobs. >> reporter: and in case you like your politics a bit more tongue-in-cheek -- >> that is how you are preparing, prepping for the rumble with chicken? >> that's right. >> reporter: two tv warriors squared off in their own rhetorical throwdown. john stewart left leading host of "the daily show" and took on bill o'reilly, the conservative host of fox, and what they joke as the battle in the air-conditioned building. >> this man here has offended every single american. >> reporter: it was plagued by a feed that reportedly froze. when things did get going, the pair needled each other over everything from foreign policy. >> we should not have gone to iraq. afghanistan we had to. >> nobody better live tweet that. >> reporter: and, jenna, this week the real campaign continues. thursday joe biden and paul ryan

will have their own throwdown. the vice presidential debate. that comes on thursday. meanwhile, the president flies out to california today. he's raising money. he has a star-studded fund-raiser and concert with katy perry and jennifer hudson. tonight mitt romney continues to campaign in the swing state of florida. jenna? >> mike viqueira at the white house, thank you. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning, jenna. >> mike talked about fund-raising. both campaigns are in their final push as the election is just a month away. president obama's campaign is nearing the $1 billion mark this election year as far as raising funds. how much of an impact does this type of money have as you near the election? >> well, it becomes important because there's still a lot of views being shaped about the race through negative advertising that you see in the battleground states. and so, you know, i don't think campaign cash is going to be a huge issue for either side but it is a measure of some enthusiasm which right now is benefiting republicans a bit more and certainly romney helped

himself in that regard with such a strong debate. >> political pundits will tell you mitt romney won the debate on wednesday night. apparently voters agree. according to gallup's daily tracking poll, obama's three-point lead, 49% to 46% down from a five-point lead reported the day before. was the debate the game changer that the romney campaign was looking for? >> it was in terms of his own campaign and i think his ability to get a second look by voters. we're going to have to see as more polling comes out whether we see a further tightening of the race. that was happening already going into the debate but there's no question that it gave romney a lot more energy. it's not unprecedented for an incumbent president to lose a debate. people were watching this and romney performed very well. if he can capitalize on the second look there's a lot he can do in terms of selling policies and arguing against the president. however many undecided voters are left will break one way or the other and that's why these debates so important. >> if the debate gave romney the much needed shot in the arm, the

president has to be happy with friday's jobs report, the unemployment rate down 8.1% to 7.8%, now the lowest since the president took office. does that help the president at this point or is the economy baked into this election? >> both things are probably true. the point that you made about the lowest level since he took office, that's important. we're already seeing in polling are more optimism among voters about the economy. that all is to the president's benefit but a very weak rae covery. 114,000 jobs is not very robust at all. you still have a very high percentage of those who have been out of work for six months or more so the economy is still really hurt iing. the question is whether anything that happens on the economy now is enough to move people's feelings significantly when you're down to a point of a much smaller pool of voters who will change their minds at this point. >> what do you have coming up on "meet the press" this morning? >> we have a special panel including newt gingrich and

powerful tweet at that. he was letting off some steam recently by tweeting that he went to college to play football and that classes are basically pointless. as nbc's michelle franzen reports, it's the latest issue that the university there is tackling. from the shotgun. in for the it htouchdown. >> reporter: when the ohio state buckeyes took on 0 the nebraska cornhuskers saturday night, it followed days of drama off the field. a tweet posted by third string quarterback jones kicked off a firestorm of controversy and re-tweets that are still circulating even though his post has been removed. on october 5, jones tweeted, why should we have to go to class if we came here to play football? we ain't come to play school. classes are pointless. the freshman's opinion comes at a time when ohio state is already on probation for ncaa violations and colleges nationwide are working to boost education requirements for

athletes. >> i think he tweeted out what a lot of guys are thinking, which is we're here to play football. we're here to play basketball. this is merely a stepping ground of getting to the next level. >> reporter: the next level and dream of going pro, just like in the movies. >> show me the money! >> reporter: but in reality the majority of college athletes don't make it that far. according to the ncaa's own statistics, less than 2% of college athletes will play professional football, making an education that much more important. >> the average nfl player plays less than five years, so even if you do play in the nfl, you want to have a life afterwards. >> reporter: jones, the freshman, has yet this season to make it from the practice field to playing in a game. meanwhile, the university issued a statement reminding student athletes to remember not to post anything that could embarrass themselves, their team, teammates, the university, their family, or other groups, organizations or people hoping to put the focus back on the

field and in the classroom. for "today," michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. and now once again here is lester. jenna, thanks. i think a lot of folks worry when they go on vacation. they lock the front door and hope everything will be fine when they get home. we have the story of a south carolina family that returned from vacation and everything appeared to be as they left it until they went online. nbc's janet shamlian has their story. >> reporter: it's not unusual to find party pictures on facebook. but what if you logtd on and saw photos of a rowdy bash thrown by strangers, then realized you recognized the scene all too well? >> i'm looking at this saying this is inside my house. >> reporter: a south carolina man who asked not to be identified for his children's sake, says that's what happened while he and his family were on vacation, an out-of-control party in his home without his ever knowing about it. >> one of them was, you know, dancing around with a funnel in his hand, the other one throwing up in the sink, a bunch of kids laying all over the floor. >> reporter: the man says the

intruders were his son's own classmates who he says owned up to his kids about what happened months after the july party. >> the kids started chiming back on facebook saying, while you guys were in new york in july these guys had broke into the house. >> reporter: the family never suspected when they returned from a trip to new york. the house looked exactly as they left it. >> then they came back the next day, we found out, and cleaned everything up, put everything back, even did the dishes. >> reporter: a broken screen is the only evidence. >> right there. >> reporter: the dad says the partiers toll his kids they pulled it out and got the in through an unlocked window. and this isn't the first time it's happened. a foreclosed home in the miami area was broken into earlier this year. police say a teen spray painted it, then posted a video online inviting everyone over to party. >> you're sitting here feeling completely violated. >> reporter: but the dad in south carolina says police tell him it's an open investigation, and they're using fphoto tags t identify the students.

i'm sorry. what? i forgot it to roll record. >> no, i did. >> you see? you see? my best acting. >> the all-star cast included the late andre the giant, perfect for the part, at least physically. >> i just want you to feel you're doing well. i hate for people to die bad. >> when he first came to the audition, i didn't understand a word he said. it's not like you throw a stick and 50 giants showed up. i sent him the part and he learned it by rote. >> he trained for months to perfect the fencing scene with cary elwes. >> there's something you don't know. >> what is that? >> i am not a fencer. >> we perfectly left that great scene until the end of the movie so they could train all the way through the making of the picture, it was about08 days. he and i trained pretty hard. >> billy crystal brought the set down. >> he ad-libbed a lot. where he goes true love is the greatest thing in the world
